Corporate Social Responsibility
We are committed to advancing our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies, systems and initiatives across all areas of our business, with a particular emphasis on ethical behaviour, concern for employee welfare, health and safety, care for the environment and community involvement.
Recognising the positive effect CSR can have - both on our reputation and our ability to create long-term value for shareholders - we make considerable effort to provide information and actively invite feedback from our shareholders, customers, suppliers, partners and employees.
In support of our core values of integrity, excellence, care, teamwork and commitment, we aim to conduct our business to the highest ethical standards of practice and legal principles, and our employees and business partners are expected to demonstrate high standards of professionalism and integrity at all times.
We have implemented a code of business conduct and ethics, including a whistle-blowing policy, covering the whole of the business and our various stakeholder interests. This is regularly reviewed and reiterated to staff and business partners.
We respect all human rights and adhere to all relevant government guidelines, taking practical steps to ensure that our products are not supplied to organisations that may use them to advance terrorism, internal repression or otherwise abuse human rights.
As a business driven largely by technical development and innovation, our main assets lie in the talent and skills of our people. We aim to attract, retain and motivate the highest calibre of employee by encouraging and rewarding high performance through competitive remuneration and incentives.
We continue to be an Investor in People-accredited employer, committed to providing learning and development opportunities for our employees. Formal performance reviews are conducted annually, with two-way communication being actively encouraged.
Our Inland Revenue-approved, all-employee Sharesave Scheme has delivered positive results within the UK. As our international footprint grows, we are investigating the implementation of a similar scheme to cover non-UK employees.
All UK employees are given the opportunity to join our Corporate Private Healthcare and Dental schemes. We also offer free influenza injections and all staff members have free access to a stress counselling service.
Regular company-wide social events are organised and promoted by our Social Committee, many of which encourage the inclusion of our employee's families.
Equality and diversity
We are committed to providing equality of opportunity to all existing and prospective employees. We are supportive of the employment and advancement of disabled workers, giving full and fair consideration to job applications and making appropriate arrangements for the training and career development of existing employees.
We aim to be an active employer and a responsible corporate citizen in the communities in which we operate.
Our highly active social committee coordinates company-wide social and sports events and supports and promotes charitable initiatives undertaken by individuals, teams or departments.
We are committed to proactive environmental management,
minimising the impact of our business operations and complying with
all relevant legislation. We are ISO
14001 accredited and aim to actively engage with, and have a
positive impact upon, the communities in which we operate.
Our guiding principles are:
- to continuously improve our environmental performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- to conserve resources through better energy efficiency, reduction of travel emissions and recycling
- to promote sustainable design principles in the development of new products and packaging
- to foster a positive culture amongst our employees, customers and supply chain by the development and communication of clear policies and the promotion of good practice
- to ensure a positive impact on the communities in which we operate through engagement with local organisations
We have launched a number of initiatives, including a project to apply environmentally-friendly design principles to all our packaging. Reduced packaging, using unbleached card and tissue paper, has resulted in a lower carbon footprint, both for the packaging itself and the efficiencies gained in transportation, reducing Scope 3 emissions from the movement of our products around the world.
We encourage recycling of office and industrial waste wherever possible; overall recycling rates for our Cambridge HQ are now at around 54% and continuously improving. We also work with a specialist waste contractor to offer a recycle scheme for end-of-life batteries and radio units. We currently achieve a recycle rate of at least 96%, meaning that less than 4% of these units go to landfill.
We are committed to reporting our total carbon emissions, based on the Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from across the Sepura Group. Our GHG emissions in 2015:
Scope 1 and 2 emissions were 1,366 TCO₂, equating to 1.8 TCO₂
Our UK employees have the opportunity to participate in the Government's Cycle to Work scheme, and employees who cycle to work can get their bike serviced free of charge.
Health and safety
Our Health and Safety Committee meets every two months and is responsible for controlling, directing and delegating responsibility for practical day-to-day compliance with our health and safety policy statement to line management and functional heads. Appropriate training, and an ongoing awareness programme for all employees, is also coordinated by this committee.
Key health and safety risks to the business continue to be fire, electrical faults, manual handling, work station use, driving and stress. Risk assessment, training and promoting awareness supports the business in the mitigation of these risks.
